Lifting the dumbbell has helped me these last 3 years in June. I feel way stronger than ever before. Got muscle tone now. Last January I upped the weight to 25 pounds from 20. It took awhile but I do even more reps than I did with the 20. When I started 3 years ago I started with 15 lb dumbbell. I only use one dumbell. Last June I still had what I call cottage cheese on the inner bicep. Now it's down to 10 per cent. It's hard to get that cottage cheese off. I do the weight almost everyday. I don't overdo it. No gym fees and less than 10 min a day. So I do 28 reps on the right arm and 40 on the left, my non dominant arm. Sometimes I'll do another set again. Plus I hold the bell while sitting over my head, with elbow locked for a count of 100. The left arm also 100. I feel the muscles taunt in my chest area from this maneuver. I am ,40 pounds overweight but it is not flabby. Trying to lose weight. I cut my bread consumption down a lot. And I eat more vegetables.
In another 6 mos I will go to 30 pounds. 5 lb increments. In weight lifting, patience is key as well as regularity. You change your life in increments as well. All you have to do is show up. And how bad do you want it. On this score I am happy with the results. Start with the small weights. Never overdo it. If older get checked out by a doctor. You don't need to do heavier weights, you can stay with the small weights, male or female. It will help you, maybe less trips to the ER. Take care of your temple.
